Description

Venoferrum Inj. 100mg (베노훼럼주) is an intravenous iron therapy containing iron(III)-hydroxide sucrose complex. Prescription-only. Per 1 mL: ferric hydroxide sucrose complex 540 mg, equivalent to 20 mg of iron. One 5 mL ampoule therefore contains 100 mg of iron.

Indication

Iron supplementation in iron-deficient patients who cannot take oral iron, who respond unsatisfactorily to it, or whose poor compliance makes oral therapy unreliable. The treatment should begin only after deficiency is confirmed by tests such as serum ferritin, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and red cell indices (MCV, MCH, MCHC).

Conditionnement

Ampoules for intravenous use, 5 mL each, 5 ampoules per box (5 × 5 mL), labeled 100 mg. Store in a tightly sealed container at room temperature.

Protocole

The total dose is not fixed. It is calculated from the patient's body weight and hemoglobin level using a formula and dosing table in the insert, then divided across sessions, with maximum single doses and infusion rates specified. The product is for IV use only and is not suitable for intramuscular injection or for giving the whole calculated dose at once. Common adverse effects include metallic or altered taste, headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, blood pressure changes, palpitations, rash, itching, fever, chills, muscle and joint pain, and injection-site reactions. Anaphylactoid reactions are rare but the most serious risk, requiring immediate emergency treatment; patients on beta blockers may respond poorly to adrenaline. Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to the product, anemia not caused by iron deficiency, iron overload or disorders of iron utilization, severe liver dysfunction, acute or chronic infection, asthma, eczema or atopic allergy, and the first trimester of pregnancy. Avoid extravasation, which can cause pain, inflammation, tissue necrosis, and skin discoloration. Do not give oral iron concurrently; oral therapy should begin at least 5 days after the last injection.
